If you have a severe injury or accident, you can rely on DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital to provide high-quality care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As the only healthcare facility serving the northwest Detroit community, DMC Sinai-Grace provided emergency and urgent care to more than 87,000 patients in 2008. Because of these high volumes, our emergency medical staff is extremely experienced in quickly treating a wide range of illnesses and injuries cases. Cardiac cases are by far the most common type of case handled by the Emergency Department (ED). The ED team is dedicated to getting patients from the ED through completed treatment in the cath lab in less than 90 minutes, a national standard for quality of care.
DMC Sinai-Grace's ED is designated a Level II trauma center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Only five hospitals in Wayne County have earned Level I or II status, three of which belong to the Detroit Medical Center: DMC Sinai-Grace, DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital and DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The ACS designates four levels of trauma care, with Level I the highest.
Level II designation signifies that the hospital is able to treat any emergency patient, regardless of the severity of the injury. A trauma surgeon is available to respond rapidly 24 hours a day. Orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians and all ancillary services are also available.
The Level II designation indicates that patients are quickly treated and transported to the operating room if needed. It also measures patient outcomes and continuous efforts at quality improvement.
Board certified Emergency Medicine physicians staff the department, complemented by registered nurses trained and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), trauma nursing and emergency pediatric nursing. In addition, the ED nursing staff receives extensive training in adult trauma care. Currently more than 90 percent of our nurses are certified.
DMC Sinai-Grace’s ED has always been considered a primary trauma and stroke center by Detroit EMS. DMC Sinai-Grace was recently recognized nationally for its exceptional stroke care.
The ED consists of 46 acute-care beds and two resuscitation trauma bays located on the ground floor of the hospital. Adjacent is the Express Care for patients with minor emergencies, open from 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m., seven days a week.
For physician training, the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at DMC Sinai-Grace recently received accreditation status of five years. This three-year program provides specialty training to 30 residents each year.
