DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital screens the hearing of all newborns before they leave the hospital. Good hearing is very important for normal speech and language development. Hearing loss can be difficult for parents to detect in infants and toddlers. Without the newborn hearing screening, hearing loss may go undetected for several years.
The earlier hearing loss is identified, the earlier the baby can get hearing aids and other services needed to develop speech and language skills.
The State of Michigan offers an informative brochure on hearing screenings for infants and how to monitor a child’s hearing abilities.
