DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital completes 3-year construction project to better serve our patients

After three years, $77 million, 200,000 man hours, 1,085 tons of steel, 9,176 sheets of dry wall and 1,200 gallons of paint, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital has officially completed all three phases of its construction project. The new main entrance, lobby, admitting and radiology areas opened to the public on June 25, 2015. This completes the largest construction project in northwest Detroit in more than a decade and more than doubled the size of the old ED. The 40-bed family-centered Intensive Care Units opened in February 2015, and the 59,000 square foot Emergency Department opened in 2014.
The spacious, modern, and inviting new lobby is anchored by a commissioned three-piece sculpture, called LifeTrees, by the Detroit Design Center. The sculpture is symbolic of Sinai-Grace Hospital's roots in the Northwest Detroit community it serves. Two smaller trees represent the former Sinai and Grace Hospitals that merged and feature amber and red-toned hand-blown glass leaves. These trees flank a larger more modernly-designed tree trunk of shiny steel and blue and white glass leaves that canopy over the other smaller trees. This larger tree grows out of a base that represents Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital, which is the building that Sinai-Grace moved into.  Here is a video of the making of the LifeTrees.
