Q: How does laser hair removal work?
A: Laser energy works by targeting melanin, the pigment that is responsible for hair color and for darker or tanned skin tones. When the laser energy reaches the hair follicle, energy is absorbed by the melanin and converted to heat, which stops hair growth.

Q:  Does skin tone or hair color affect laser hair removal?
A: Laser hair removal only works when the hair is darker than the surrounding skin. Coarse, dark hair responds the best to laser treatment. With light skin, fewer treatments are required and better results are obtained. Tanned patients should wait until their tan fades before attempting treatment.

The DMC Sinai-Grace Cosmetic Center has two different lasers, one for fairer skinned patients and one for darker skinned patients. For people with darker skin, results are slower because more sessions are needed.

Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: Multiple treatment sessions are necessary to obtain optimal results. Most patients will need six to 10 sessions before they will see permanent results. Darker skinned patients may need up to 15 sessions. Treatments are usually given every three to four weeks. Each patient’s treatment will be designed to match their hair type and skin tone. For any given patient, results cannot be precisely predicted.

Q: How can I find out if I am a candidate for laser hair removal?
A:  The DMC Sinai-Grace Cosmetic Center offers a free consultation with a nurse specially trained in laser hair removal. You can receive a test of a laser treatment to gauge your skin’s reaction.

Q: What areas can be treated with the laser?
Any area except around the eye; including face, underarm, bikini, back, chest and legs.

Q:  How much will it cost?
A: Prices vary depending on the area being treated, with packages of three and six sessions available, as well as $1 per pulse for small areas. The DMC Sinai-Grace Cosmetic Center offers competitive pricing. However, be aware that, as with all forms of medical care, you should pay attention to quality, not just cost. The Cosmetic Center’s nurses are trained in laser hair removal and supervised by a physician. Our caring, professional staff has a reputation for providing individual attention that will make your experience pleasant.
